Dorothy “Dot” Traywick Auten Mauldin of Charlotte, 85, formerly of Belmont, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6,, 2016. Dorothy was born in Gaston County on April 7, 1931 to the late Howard Franklin Traywick, Sr. and Faye Edith Austin Traywick.
Dorothy grew up in Belmont and attended Belmont High School and Gaston College. Growing up, she spent many hours fishing with her dad on the Catawba River. She learned to bake during time spent with her beloved grandmother, Lucy Jane Hooks Traywick, and her almond pound cake is unsurpassed. In 1949, Dorothy married Glenn Boyd Auten of Cramerton. They enjoyed many years of marriage and had two children, Glenda and Jane. Glenn preceded her in death in 1966.
In 1969, Dorothy married Charles Gerald (Jerry) Mauldin, Sr. of Charlotte, NC, who had three children, Cathy, Kelly, and Chuck. Dorothy loved having all the kids’ friends over and everyone was welcome at her table. Jerry preceded her in death in 2012.
Dorothy opened the Carousel Beauty Salon at Hampshire Hills Shopping Center in 1973 and was the proprietor of the salon until 1992. She played golf and tennis in her younger years and later cheered for Rafael Nadal. She enjoyed traveling to the mountains, baking, gardening, hosting family gatherings, sketching, and feeding the neighboring wildlife. Dorothy’s humorous interpretation of life kept family and friends entertained. Her willingness to express herself freely was a hallmark characteristic, often imitated but never duplicated.
Dorothy’s large and loving family includes children Jane Auten Mayhew and husband Roger, Glenda Auten Burch and husband Danny, Kelly Mauldin, Chuck Mauldin; grandchildren Walter Carter, Darian Burch and boyfriend Joshua Ziemann, Caitlin Burch, Jordan Richards and husband Clark, Raina Harrell, Courtney Mayhew and fiancée Chris Pimentel; siblings Terry Traywick and wife Jean, Lyda Rudisill, Billie Acker and husband Zane (both deceased), Frank Traywick and wife Sharon, Nancy Eller and husband Buddy; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
