Donald Lamar Broome, 82, of Stanley, NC died Tuesday October 14, 2014 at Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas, NC. Born February 19, 1932 in Dalton, Georgia he was a son of the late John Thomas Broome and Margaret Annette "Nettie" McCoy Broome. Don was a wonderful person and he will be greatly missed. He loved life, God, his family, and his country. Don shared God's love everywhere he went. He faithfully served for over 25 years at Lake Norman Baptist Church and has served recently as a charter member of the Neighborhood Church in Huntersville, NC. He served in many capacities including Deacon, Chairman of the Deacons, LNBC choir member for over 20 years, and many other roles. Don loved fellowshipping with his Sunday School group. Don married the love of his life, Sandra, and they shared over 56 years as husband and wife and best friends. He was proud to have served his country in the Air Force and enjoyed celebrating Veterans Day every year with other veterans at The Golden Corral. Don had a wonderful career as an Engineer/Scientist for IBM and worked with the NASA Space Program. He had a front row seat for all the Apollo missions and met all the astronauts who walked on the moon. Don had many other interests and hobbies including the Ham Radio Club where he was known as AF4CU for many years; he loved gardening and his friends benefitted from his sharing home-grown tomatoes and other treats. Don loved photography and actually won some awards for his work. He loved people and he loved spending time with them, whether it was eating out or shopping for books about space. Don was a humble servant to others and a good and faithful servant of the Lord. He now enjoys the blessings and rewards of eternal life in Heaven. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 18, 2014 at Lake Norman Baptist Church with Rev. Landon Horton officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sandra Teague Boome; brother, David L. Broome and wife Sue; two nephews; several great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his nephew, John Bradford. Memorials may be made in his honor to Neighborhood Church Building Fund, 12625 Kemerton Lane, Huntersville, NC 28078.
