Cloyd Smith Goodrum III, 54, passed away from natural causes on August 16, 2012. He departed the world peacefully at home. Cloyd was born on March 9, 1958 in Davidson, NC. He studied at NC State and graduated from UNC-C with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. He earned a Graduate Degree in computer science at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a professor of Computer Science at UNC-Charlotte. He was also a Coach of the Programming Team. Cloyd is irreplaceable. Maintaining a consistent orbit between his home, UNCC, and the local coffee shop, Jackson's Java, Cloyd led a bohemian and intellectually elite lifestyle. As a professor, Cloyd educated countless students with characteristic brilliance, patience, and sense of humor. Out of the classroom, he held court, sharing his breadth of knowledge, entertaining with his quick wit, engaging in philosophical conversation, delighting and amusing all. Cloyd was a gifted poet and was especially known for writing and performing his celebrity haiku. His original songs are equally memorable and his "down-on-one knee" finales are unforgettable. Cloyd loved culture, both high and low. Whether the topic was Dostoevsky or Sponge Bob, Cloyd was always an enthusiastic, albeit humble, expert. Cloyd was the inventor of the original twiddle stick. Good chance that most of the time, wherever he was, he was the smartest guy in the room but because he had such a kind heart he never made anyone feel dumb (unless you count the fact that when people would give him their phone numbers, he would instantly tell them the number's square root). Cloyd's heart was as enormous as his intellect. He was a gift to this world. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cloyd Smith Goodrum Jr. and Bobbie Kiser Goodrum. He is survived by his sister Beverly Ann Goodrum of Charlottesville, VA, his brother William Ashby Goodrum, his sister-in-law Pamela Wolfe Goodrum, his neice, Annabelle Rose Goodrum, his nephew Benjamin Kiser Goodrum, and his "ilors" (inlaws-once-removed), John and Dawn Keller, and many cherished cousins. A celebration of Cloyd's life will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 2 PM at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home Chapel, 16901 Old Stateville Road, Huntersville, NC 28078.
