Charles Locke Scripps

Charles Locke Scripps, 72, of Davidson, NC passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019.

Locke was born in Peoria, IL and raised in Milwaukee, WI. He lived in Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and Antwerp, Belgium before moving to North Carolina in 2004.

He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue and an MBA from the University of Cincinnati. He had two employers during his forty-year career, Procter and Gamble and Findley Adhesives, a specialty chemical manufacturer. His roles included product development, sales and marketing, and operational management. He especially enjoyed working in Belgium from 2000 to 2004, where he was able to travel to Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin with his wife, Meg.

Locke’s great loves were his family, music, golf, and cards. He enjoyed playing jazz standards, children’s music, and seasonal songs on the piano, His excitement for new music continued throughout his life from Mozart to Dave Brubeck to the Talking Heads. His friends will remember his booming distance and erratic aim on the golf course, but he never let bad golf get in the way of a good time. At the end of the day, he liked to pair a good Belgian beer with a hand of bridge or a game of cribbage with family and friends.

He is survived by a loving family, including his wife Myrle (Meg) Grier Scripps, son Charles Ashton (Chad), daughter-in-law Mieke, grandsons Locke and Ashton, brothers Ric and Tom, and sister Sally.

Locke’s selflessness and quick wit helped him to develop lasting friendships in each stage of his rich and full life. He will be terribly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
