Byron Lee Campbell, Barney as he was known to family and friends, age 89, died January 16, 2014 at his residence in Cornelius, NC. He was the youngest of nine children born in Mannington, West Virginia on March 27, 1924 to Lawrence Milford Campbell and Bertha Jane Hughes Campbell. Barney graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1942 and served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1946. On November 13, 1948 Barney married Gwendolyn Lucille West also of Mannington, West Virginia. In 1948 he and his new wife moved to Weirton, West Virginia and he was employed with Weirton Steel Corporation in the Tin Mill until 1986. He was a lifetime member of the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club. From 1986 until 2007 Barney drove cars professionally for the State Park Motors Company. In 2007 Barney and his wife Gwen relocated to Cornelius, NC to be closer to their son and his family. He was an avid golfer, an accomplished square dancer and an aviation enthusiast. In 1948 he obtained his private pilot's license and was an aviation enthusiast until his last days. He began golfing in 1938 and didn't give up the links until 2012. While he loved in Weirton he was also a member of the Dip N Dive Square Dance Club in Wintersville Ohio. He and his family were members of the First Baptist Church in Weirton, West Virginia. Memorial services will be conducted at a later date. Barney is survived by his wife, Gwen Campbell and his two children, Byron Lawrence Campbell and Paula Jane Johns. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
