After graduating from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, class of 1957, Mr. Buchan earned an electrical engineering degree from Valparaiso University class of 1961. He earned a JD from Duke University School of Law, 1964. He was a member of the Washington DC and North Carolina Bar Associations. For over 40 years he served the Government as a patent attorney, first for the Navy and then the Department of Justice.
In 2006, Fred and Lynn retired to Fairfield Harbour in New Bern, North Carolina where they were members of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. When not playing golf at Harbour Point Golf Club and Taberna Country Club, he enjoyed the creativity of the performing arts. He and Lynn both served on the Craven Community College Foreign Film Series Committee. He enjoyed a variety of music including classical, opera, and jazz. A voracious reader, he also attended the theater, the Charlotte Symphony, and lectures on current events.
After many visits to family and friends in their hometown of Charlotte, the Buchans relocated to The Pines at Davidson, North Carolina in 2015.
