Awilda Bahamundi, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on May 13, 2024 in Salisbury, NC, at the age of 76. She was born on August 17, 1947, in Manhattan, NY, to her loving parents Hiram Ortiz and Rita Quintana. Awilda was a dear sister to the late Johnny Ortiz, Luchy Ortiz, and Tito Ortiz.
Awilda led a remarkable life filled with dedication and passion. She worked tirelessly for over twenty-five years at Presbyterian Medical Center in New York before retiring from TIAA in North Carolina after seventeen years of service. Her commitment and contributions to the medical and financial sectors left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Growing up in New York, Awilda attended high school and college there before settling down in Rockland County to raise her beautiful family. Eventually, she made Charlotte, NC her home where she spent her later years surrounded by loved ones.
Outside of her professional life, Awilda found joy in various hobbies and interests. She had a special love for dancing, especially Salsa, which brought light and energy into every room she entered. An avid traveler with an adventurous spirit, she explored new places near and far. Awilda was known for her talent in entertaining friends and family with warmth and hospitality. Her long island ice tea was a favorite among those lucky enough to share it with her.
In addition to leaving behind a legacy of hard work and kindness, Awilda is survived by her devoted husband William E. Cohen; her loving children Julia Bahamundi and Jason Bahamundi; cherished grandson Jayden Bahamundi; caring sister Evelyn Casal; nieces; nephews; as well as numerous friends who will always hold a special place for her in their hearts.
Services to honor Awilda's life will take place at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville, NC on May 17th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM followed by visitations at Volk Leber Funeral Home in Teaneck, NJ on May 23rd. These visitations will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 PM and 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Interment will take place on Friday, May 24th at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ. Her memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of sharing in her journey.
Awilda's presence will be deeply missed but her spirit will continue to inspire us all to live life fully and passionately as she did. May she rest in peace knowing that she was cherished beyond measure.
