Angus Wicker

January 15, 1934 — March 13, 2014

Angus McNair (Mack) Wicker, 80, of Huntersville, NC passed away Thursday March 13, 2014 Mack is preceded in death by his beloved Helen, older sister Anne and her husband Harold Waddington who died in 2007, and his twin sister Caroline who died in 2010. Mack's sisters married brothers - the two nicest men in Pennsylvania. In 1939 when he was five, Mack and his two sisters: Anne, 9 and twin Caroline were placed in the Presbyterian Church-supported orphanage at Barium Springs, N.C. It was a wonderful home for children and the three of them were fortunate that a thoughtful Aunt Callie Battley arranged for them to grow up there. He finished high school at Barium in 1952, in a class of twelve boys and eight girls. He toured N.C. colleges without a degree, but first served a three-year stint in the Marines; a group he was uniquely unqualified to join. He settled in Charlotte, his last Marine Corps station. In 1960 by some miracle, Mack met and married Helen Hodges, a beautiful girl who loved him and made him a better man. She helped him get a job with Duke Power Company where he stayed for 32 years working in Substation Maintenance & Construction. During that time Mack met dozens of smart, comical, and good people. In retirement, he gardened and worked on his neighbors' lawnmowers. Mack loved Beer, Ice Hockey, Beautiful Girls, Gentle Music, Dogs, the NFL, and keeping in touch with his Birth-Buddy Twin Caroline. More than anything, he loved to read History, Fiction, Poetry, his morning Observer and The New Yorker magazine. Cancer took his precious Helen in 2009 and he never recovered from watching her die. He leaves a son John, daughter-in-law Pattie, and a much beloved daughter Sybil who cared for him over his final months. He loved his "Chaps" Luke and Emma. Mack attended church periodically throughout his life and cherished the people he met there. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to University City United Methodist Church in memory of Helen,6100 Sugar Creek Rd. Charlotte, NC 28269, The Humane Society of Charlotte,2700 Toomey Ave. Charlotte, NC 28203 or to Barium Springs Home for Children 156 Frazier Loop, Statesville, NC 28677 in memory of Mack and his sisters Anne and Caroline.
