Alfred “Al” Martin Bauer, 78 of Fenton, Michigan passed away in Huntersville, North Carolina on Saturday, December 3, 2016 after a prolonged illness. Al was born in Portland, Michigan on February 27, 1938. He attended Portland High School where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was an outstanding athlete. Al was selected All-State first team in both basketball and baseball in 1956. He attended Western Michigan University from 1956-1960 on athletic scholarships in basketball and football. While attending WMU, Al was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and in 1959 he received the Omicron Delta Kappa award for outstanding athletic and scholarly achievements. He was one of three men to receive this prestigious award that year. Al graduated with honors with a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Western Michigan in1960. Al valued higher education and continued to pursue advanced degrees including a Masters of Arts in Education from University of Michigan in 1967 and he received his highest academic achievement, a Specialist in Education Ed.S. degree from Michigan State University in 1977.
Al Bauer was a long time teacher and coach in Michigan. Al “Coach” Bauer loved team sports and he coached many high school sports including basketball, baseball and football. The schools where he taught and coached include, Cheboygan Catholic High School in Cheboygan, Saint Agnes in Flint, Lakeville High School in Lakeville and he completed his high school coaching career at Ainsworth High School in Flint.
Al and his family moved to Fenton in 1970 and became very involved in the community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as President of the Fenton Jaycee’s, President of the Fenton Rotary, President of the Flint and Fenton Junior Achievement, and was on the board of Genesee County Planned Parenthood. He was an active representative for the Michigan Education Association and in the mid 1970’s he served as a board member on the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.).
After his long tenure in education and coaching, he changed his career and trained in New York to become a stockbroker. He had a 19-year career working in the stock market for Merrill Lynch, Paine Webber and finally retired from UBS in 2004.
Al loved sailing and golfing and he was very active in the Lake Fenton Sailing Club and he served as Treasurer and Commodore of the Lake Fenton Sailing Club in the mid 1980’s. Al had a passion for golf and spent most summer afternoons at Spring Meadows Golf Club playing golf with his buddies.
Al was very proud of his daughter, son and their eight grandchildren. He loved to travel and often went to Colorado and North Carolina to visit and to play with his grandchildren. Al was loved by many and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his two brothers Steve Bauer of Ellenton, Florida, Greg Bauer of Grand Ledge, Michigan, his daughter Michelle Bauer Carpenter of Boulder, Colorado, his son Michael Bauer of Charlotte, North Carolina and his eight grandchildren Ashleigh, Tyler, Robert, Marleina, Cole, Conrad, Annalise and Thorin. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A family memorial will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina on December 21, 2016 and a celebration of Al Bauer’s life is planned for July of 2017 in the Fenton, Michigan area.
