Al Flanagan

August 1, 1950 — March 24, 2017

The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Ernest Allan “Big Al” Flanagan of Sistersville, West Virginia went to the Spirit in the Sky after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. He was 66. Allan was a shining example of a devoted husband and best friend. He loved his wife, Julie, with every ounce of his being and nothing was above her. He was a loving father to his daughter, Allison, son, Scott, daughter-in-law, Cori, and partner-in-crime/grandson Rory. In addition to his immediate family, he is fondly remembered by his brothers, sisters, and their families.

Big Al was a natural athlete and fierce competitor with near Herculean-strength who strove to be the best and often was. Big Al also possessed a superior intellect regarding many things (whether or not he was right was inconsequential). But anywho! His patience, calm demeanor, and inclination to learn all things unfamiliar to him were unrivaled. He would often make good use of these attributes throughout life when playing his favorite sports, many of which he still holds records in; including Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Table Tennis, Billiards, Dig Dug, the Christmas Tree javelin, the 30m club toss, and the stationary lawnmower launch.

Above all of his athletic achievements, Al was most proud of his education and the success he enjoyed in his career. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Business with honors from Bellevue University in Nebraska and was the President of Flanagan Underwriting and Actuarial Consultants, Inc. for many years. He supported his family in their pursuits as well and his wish was to do so for future generations. Therefore, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to:

“The E. Allan & Julie A. Flanagan Descendants Education Trust” P.O. Box 1767 Huntersville, NC 28070.

A celebration of Big Al’s life will be held on Saturday, April 1st starting with visitation from 2pm to 4pm, and the memorial service beginning at 4:00pm at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home, Huntersville, NC 28078.
